  1. DOGZ, Your Computer Pet (TM)

  3. Welcome to Dogz!
  4.  
  5. Ordering Dogz for yourself or for a friend is simple - either go to your 
  6. local software retailer or call us directly at 1-800-48-ADOPT.
  7.  
  8. Also available in the Computer Petz line from PF.Magic: Catz and Oddballz! 
  9.  
  10. Catz (TM) are the next in line of Your Computer Petz, following in the pawprints 
  11. of Dogz.  Catz live on your desktop and they don't mind sharing it with you.  
  12. Your Catz enjoy being petted.  You can play with them and watch them stalk the 
  13. Mouse across your documents.  In the screensaver mode, they also enjoy taking 
  14. CatNapz.
  15.  
  16. Oddballz (TM) are the latest generation of Computer Petz.  Like Catz and Dogz, 
  17. Oddballz live and play with you on your computer desktop.  However, Oddballz 
  18. are different from anything you've ever seen before--with strange new habits, 
  19. weird mutations and surprising reactions for you to discover.  Start with seven 
  20. hilarious breeds of Oddballz and then collect more off the World Wide Web.

  22. You can have Dogz, Catz and Oddballz installed on your computer, but you can only
  23. have one active at a time.

  29. HOW TO INSTALL DOGZ:
  30. - Run SETUP.EXE
  31. - This will install a copy of Dogz to your hard drive.
  32.

  34. QUICK START
  35.  
  36. Getting Started
  37. - After you install Dogz, you'll see a "Dogz" icon in a Windows
  38.   Program Group (or under the "Programs" item of the START menu
  39.   in Windows '95) named "Yourname's Dogz" (where "yourname" is your
  40.   first name).
  41. - Start Dogz by double-clicking on the icon named "Dogz" (or simply 
  42.   selecting the "Dogz" icon under Windows '95).
  43. - This will open the Dogz Adoption Kit
  44. - You can pet and play with any of the five Dogz breeds and decide
  45.   which one is best for you!
  46. - When you decide which one you want to adopt, click the "Adopt 
  47.   Me Now" button.
  48.  
  49. Important Note
  50. - Dogz love to run around on your computer screen.
  51. - Whenever you let a Dogz loose on the screen, you will not
  52.   be able to click on any other application until you...
  53.  
  54.   1) put the Dogz back into the Doghouse, or
  55.   2) Quit Dogz, or
  56.   3) Press ALT-TAB to switch to another application, or
  57.   4) Press ESCAPE (this will instantly pop the Dogz back into
  58.      their Doghouses)
  59.  
  60. In the Adoption Kit you can pet and play with five different breeds 
  61. of Dogz.  Once you have adopted your own Dogz, you will have many 
  62. other things to do.  You will be able to feed, play with and train 
  63. your Dogz.  You will be able to groom them to change their color. 
  64. Your Dogz will be able to act as Guard Dogz, protecting your computer 
  65. from monitor burn-in and file snoops.  Over time, your adopted
  66. puppyDogz will grow up to be a full size Dogz.

  69. IN THE ADOPTION KIT TRY THIS...
  70.  
  71. Picking up your Dogz
  72. - To pick up Dogz and move them to a new location, click the 
  73.   right mouse button while the cursor is anywhere over the Dogz.
  74. - Don't worry - this won't hurt it.  Releasing the mouse button 
  75.   will drop your Dogz safely to the desktop.
  76. - If you drop the Dogz back on top of its doghouse, it will pop
  77.   back into its doghouse.
  78.  
  79. Dogz love to be petted!
  80. - You can pet your Dog at any time.  To do this, simply click and
  81.   hold the left mouse button while the cursor is over the Dogz.
  82.   The cursor will change to a "petting hand."
  83. - Stroke the Dog with the cursor while holding down the left 
  84.   mouse button.
  85. - If you pet your Dogz just right and long enough, it might 
  86.   roll over to let you scratch its stomach, or even go to sleep.

  88. Sleeping
  89. - If you leave Dogz alone for several minutes, they usually
  90.   nod off to sleep.  You may even catch them dreaming!
  91. - A nice way to wake up Dogz is to pet them while they're
  92.   sleeping.

  95. KNOWN MISBEHAVIORS ("TROUBLESHOOTING")
  96.  
  97. "I'm having trouble putting Dogz back into their Dogzhouses."
  98. - Make sure your cursor hand is positioned over the Dogzhouse when
  99.   you drop the Dogz off.
  100.  
  101. "My Dog disappears from the screen."
  102. - Like a real dog, your Dogz will sometimes run off on its own errands.
  103. - Try double-clicking the mouse to call your Dogz back.
  104.  
  105. "My Dog sometimes freezes on the screen."
  106. - Digital Dogz need to behave well and make sure they don't slow down
  107.   your system.  If an important application needs to control your
  108.   computer for a few seconds, your Dogz will hold still until that
  109.   application lets go.  It's nothing to worry about!
  110.  
  111. "The Dogz Playpen window has changed colors."
  112. - If you change your Display resolution or color palette while Dogz is 
  113.   running, your Dogz colors may shift undesirably.  To fix this, simply
  114.   quit and relaunch Dogz.
  115. - Also, when running on a system with only 256 colors, opening or selecting
  116.   another application can sometimes cause Dogz colors to change (the programs
  117.   are competing for the same colors).  If your Dogz turns black, changes
  118.   colors in an unexpected way, or the Playpen background colors become
  119.   distorted, try minimizing the Playpen window and re-opening it.
  120. - If this does not work, close and re-open Dogz and the problem should
  121.   go away.
  122.  
  123. "Guard Dogz requires a password, but I did not set one!"
  124. - If you had already set a password for another screen saver, you may find
  125.   that this password is still required for Guard Dogz.
  126.  
  127. "I'm not hearing any sounds."
  128. - To hear your Dogz, you need a SoundBlaster(tm) compatible card 
  129.   installed.
  130. - Remember that if Dogz is ever minimized or another application is
  131.   opened on top of Dogz (even when "Always on Top" is set), your Dogz
  132.   will keep quiet.  Only when Dogz is the foremost application will
  133.   sounds be heard.
  134.  
  135. "The Playpen window sometimes appears on screen over my screen saver."
  136. - If you set the Playpen window to be "Always on Top" and Dogz is
  137.   left running in Fullscreen mode, on some computers, the Playpen
  138.   window will be visible above other screen savers when they appear
  139.   on screen.  To eliminate this problem, either turn off the "Always
  140.   on Top" setting or be sure to put your Dogz back into the Playpen
  141.   when you are finished playing with your Dogz.

  143. "Does Installing Dogz affect my system files?"
  144. - The files that come with PF. Magic Dogz are as system-friendly 
  145.   as possible.  Dogz won't crawl into your AUTOEXEC.BAT or 
  146.   CONFIG.SYS files and mess them up.

  149.  
  150. SERIOUS TROUBLESHOOTING  (Slightly more technical, but not impossible)
  151.  
  152. "Dogz booted me back to the Adoption Kit, and is asking me for an Unlock Code!"
  153. - If you installed the Retail CD (or floppies) over any previously 
  154.   installed demo versions of Dogz, the Retail version may "revert" and think it's
  155.   the back in the Adoption Kit demo mode.  Even if you are not sure that you installed 
  156.   over another version, the following solution is highly recommended for this problem: 
  157.  
  158.   I. If you are running Windows 3.11 please disable 32 bit disk and file access:
  159.  
  160.         1) Locate the Control Panels in the Main program group.
  161.         2) Click on Enhanced
  162.         3) Select Virtual memory
  163.         4) Select change
  164.         5) Disable 32 bit file and disk access
  165.   
  166.   II. Uninstall Dogz completely:
  167.   
  168.         1)Search your computer for all Dogz-related files (see outline below)
  169.         2)Uninstall (delete them) 
  170.         3)Re-boot your machine
  171.  
  172.   III. Re-install from your retail CD (or floppies).
  173.  
  174.   
  175. *** HOW TO UNINSTALL DOGZ: ***
  176.  
  177.   I.  In the WINDOWS DIRECTORY (C:\WINDOWS, C:\WIN, or C:\Win95) find and delete 
  178.       the following files:
  179.       1)  Dogzdll.dll
  180.       2)  Guarddog.dll
  181.       3)  Guarddog.ini
  182.       4)  Guarddog.scr   (If you don't have all of the Guarddog.* files, skip 'em)
  183.  
  184.   II. In the root of your C: drive delete the following directory:
  185.       Dogz.xxx  <-- (where xxx = the 1st three letters of the registered owner 
  186.                     or the letters "fir")
  187.  
  188.   * The location of the WINDOWS and DOGZ.xxx directories may vary depending on whether 
  189.     you chose to use their default locations upon install.
  190.  
  191.   * It is good practice to exit all applications whenever installing software.
  192.     To do this simply press CTRL-ESC (Win 3.1 users) and CTRL-ALT-DEL (Win 95 users).
  193.     Close all programs except Program Manager or Explorer.
  194.  
  195. "I get an error message saying that certain Wing*.* files are locked, then install fails."
  196. - Whenever you install Dogz, the following files will also be installed to the Windows' 
  197.   System directory:
  198.  
  199.   1)  ctl3d.dll 
  200.   2)  ctl3d32.dll
  201.   3)  ctl3dv2.dll
  202.   4)  dva.386
  203.   5)  wing.dll
  204.   6)  wing32.dll
  205.   7)  wingde.dll
  206.   8)  wingdib.drv
  207.   9)  wingpal.wnd
  208.  
  209.   These files may already exist on your system.  If any of the above files are set to 
  210.   read-only, you will receive a "Wing*.* files are locked" error message.  
  211.  
  212.   Solution:
  213.   Windows 3.1 and 3.11 users:  
  214.   Locate and launch the MS-DOS Prompt program (usually located in the MAIN program group).
  215.  
  216.   Windows 95 users:
  217.   Click on the Start Button located on the task bar, choose Programs then MS-DOS Prompt.
  218.  
  219.   You should see the following:     C:\Windows>                            
  220.  
  221.   1) Type cd system <ENTER>                    
  222.  
  223.   (You should now see:  C:\Windows\System>)                        
  224.  
  225.   2) Type the following three commands:                    
  226.  
  227.   ATTRIB -R CTL3D*.* <ENTER>                        
  228.   ATTRIB -R DVA.386  <ENTER>                        
  229.   ATTRIB -R WING*.*  <ENTER>                    
  230.  
  231.   Example:  C:\Windows\System>ATTRIB -R CTL3D*.*  <ENTER>
  232.  
  233.   (If you type in the "attrib" command correctly all you will see is C:\Windows\System>
  234.   after pressing <ENTER>.)
  235.  
  236.   3) This should resolve the problem that you have encountered.  You can now commence 
  237.   reinstallation of Dogz.  
  238.  
  239. "When my Guard Dog Screensaver activates while I'm not running Dogz, I get this error
  240. message: "You Must Adopt a Dogz to have Guard Dogz guard your screen".  But I already
  241. adopted!"
  242. - The Dogz directory may have been inadvertently moved.  When you installed Dogz, a 
  243.   default directory, Dogz.XXX was created at the root level or your C:\ drive (where 
  244.   'XXX' are the first three letters of your name or the letters "fir").  Please 
  245.   make sure that the root statements of your Dogz path in the files below do in fact 
  246.   reflect the location of the Dogz.XXX directory.   
  247.   
  248.   The following information details how you can go about finding the EXACT path of your
  249.   Dogz folder.  
  250.  
  251.   Located in the Dogz.XXX directory is a file labeled "Dogz.ini"
  252.  
  253.   If you double click on the this file you will see something like this:
  254.  
  255.  ----------------------------------

  282.   The line indicating the path of the Dogz.XXX directory is:

  286.   You now need to locate the Guarddog.ini file which is located in the Windows 
  287.   directory.  Double-click on the Guarddog.ini file to open it.
  288.  
  289.   You should see something like this:

  296.   *If the "Root" statement in the Dogz.ini or Guarddog.ini contains a trailing 
  297.   backslash, you must remove it.*

  305.   If the Root statements in the Dogz.ini file or the Guarddog.ini are missing or 
  306.   are not identical, you must make the necessary edits.
